This course will explore urban legends of the Old Testament.
This course examines forty of the most commonly misinterpreted passages in the Old Testament, exploring the origins of these "urban legends" and the factors that contribute to their misunderstanding. Students will learn how neglecting context, misusing historical background, or misunderstanding the original language can lead to interpretive errors.Through a pastoral approach and practical examples, topics such as the origin of evil, the purpose of Mosaic food laws, and misconceptions about dinosaurs or NASA discovering Joshua's long day will be analyzed. Emphasizing sound hermeneutical principles, this course equips students to avoid common interpretive missteps while developing skills to accurately handle key biblical texts. Students will also gain tools to apply these techniques to other Old Testament passages for faithful and effective interpretation.
